COLD RIVER contest: A chance to win $1000

Brrr. It's a frosty morning here in Vermont. I'm ready for snow! COLD RIVER, which arrives in stores next week, is set in the fictional town of Black Falls, Vermont. The story takes place in late December and early January, when it's cold, snowy and very beautiful here.

I wrote COLD RIVER and COLD PURSUIT, the first book in the series, during two of our snowiest winters on record. I just had to look out my office window for inspiration! (The photo of the old sugar maple at sunrise is the view from my office.)

Of course, not all of the scenes take place outside...

To celebrate the publication of COLD RIVER, MIRA Books and I are sponsoring a contest that will award the winner $1000 to pursue his/her own adventure. To enter, all you have to do is answer, in 100 words or less, the following question: “If you could do anything in the world, what would your perfect personal adventure be?”

On November 24th, you can go to www.coldrivercontest.com to find rules and information on how to enter. That's COLD RIVER's official "on sale" date.

I love to strap on my snowshoes and head out into the woods in winter, but I also love to sit by the woodstove with a good book. I'm looking forward to getting into stores over the holidays, but I admit I seldom leave the house on "black" Friday itself. My sister-in-law, however, is one of the intrepid crack-of-dawn shoppers. She gets together with her friends, and they make a day of it and have a blast. She always comes home with the most amazing deals!

What about you? Do you shop on black Friday? Do you go with family and friends or go off on your own? Or do you stay home? We start a Christmas puzzle the day after Thanksgiving.

I'd love to hear about any traditions you have for the "day after."

And for those of you who work on black Friday...I hope it's a fun, stimulating and rewarding day for you. I know one thing: I always give books at Christmas. A paperback makes a perfect stocking stuffer!

    Have a great day, everyone,
    Carla

Hello everyone, First of all Thanks Carla for Blogging, as you know I love talking to you. I can’t wait for the book to come out. As you know, I will be in line when the stores open to get it. So on to your blog…

Yes, I do shop on Black Friday, it’s a day that I do with my kids, We all love to take the store by “surprise” when all of us head out in different directions to get our “Christmas presents”  Then we go to the next store and do the same thing. With 3 kids… you get a lot of those “limited” items in hand.:) Sometimes, I will go to Florida and do it with my Brother which is great time spent together. This year I will be doing it in a different place, so I will see how it goes… NC here we come. :)

Usually on Saturday we put up the Christmas Tree while the family is still all together. We play Christmas songs everyday till Christmas then, praying that Mother-Nature gives us Snow for Christmas morning. :)

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Holidays to everyone! Have Fun on whatever you do on Black Friday just be “Merry” and be “Safe”! :)

I usually work on Black Friday. This year I am working so a coworker can have the time off with her extended family out of town. I really don't mind working on that day because I work in a massage clinic and usually the clients are all in terrific moods. My only complaint for that day is the traffic is always bad and my hubby's commute time if effected. Maybe this year more people will car pool to the malls!

Happy Thanksgiving, Carla. I look forward to your book.

Good morning, Carla. Love the post, wish you well with the new release, and must admit that you couldn't force me near a store on Black Friday! It's hard enough to make myself go when the stores aren't busy, but on that particular day? NO WAY!

Loved the photo of your maple outside your office window, but it made me miss my big ponderosa pine more than ever. I'm on the third floor and looked directly into the branches of the tree until it was felled by beetles last year. This will be my first winter not to look out my window at snow-covered pine needles.

Vanetta, you remind me how our traditions change and adapt to circumstances. I have a feeling you'll have fun wherever you are!

Lynne, I'm always in a good mood when I show up at the spa for a massage. What a great job.

I hear ya, Kate, and so sorry about the pine. We had the tree doc out to see our maple and he said it's old but has loads of time left.

Black Friday finds me hiding in my house because I'm not brave enough to go shopping that day. However, my hubs? Loves to go out Black Friday morning and find good deals. He's already surfing the Black Friday sites for deals. The kids and I usually watch a Christmas movie or gear up for a soccer game outside. *G*

Carla, what a still and peaceful photo!

RE: Black Friday, I'm with Kate--I really do not like huge shopping crowds. I always try to get any present requiring a visit to a mall purchased well before Dec 1st or, failing that, hit it early on a weekday morning before the crowds show up.

Friday morning after Turkey Day the soulmate and I always head for our cabin in the mountains for the 3 day weekend. During the course of the year, we sometimes go there by ourselves and other times invite friends. But Thanksgiving weekend is just for Steve and me (and the Boys). Often we see the first snow of the year on Sunday. Not this year, though, we've been hammered with snow in the mountains, so maybe we'll actually be able to ski, which would be very cool.

Carla - I am already thinking about my adventure. I missed it 18 mos. ago because I wasn't sure what I wanted my adventure to be. I love to go into stores at off-times. Wal-Mart, e.g. is good at midnight. Plus, we celebrate Thanksgiving w/ my husband's side of the family on Black Friday. He has 4 siblings and all of us have already had Thanksgiving w/ the other side. The last 2 years we have had appetizers, soups, salads, and desserts. This year we are having all of the above plus some of the traditional stuff. Nothing replaces family time.

Brandy, my sister-in-law and your husband could talk! She has a battle plan before she goes out.

    Susan...your cabin sounds idyllic.

Wal-Mart at midnight, Rebecca? Sounds like an adventure in and of itself. Btw, I have 6 brothers and sisters. We love to get together.

I used to like to go out for "the hunt" on Black Friday when my kids were younger but now..un ah, no way! It's not worth it and it's just not as fun as it used to be! If there something special. I send someone else out to get it.

Yes, I have been known to take my dtr and sometimes friends on midnight runs. Twelve-yr olds think that is pretty cool. I know you like 5A, but I sometimes work from 10P-10A, so my body clock is not normal. Once, on one of our midnight runs, we picked up a little doggy jacket for the cat. She doesn't like it very well.

I usually just clean up from Thanksgiving on Black Friday and then I sit down with a good book and maybe watch some old movies, that is "my holiday". I worked in merchandizing for bunches of years and Black Friday lost it's luster for me years ago.

I've been enjoying your work for a long time now Carla and I look forward to your new title! :)

Carla: The book looks terrific. Good luck with the release. As for Black Friday? As far as I'm concerned, any excuse to shop is fine by me.

Oh, good, Carla--COLD RIVER goes on the "buy now" list. I'm ready to get my vacation stash ready.

Your photos are always beautiful. I can look at them and smell the fresh, cold snap in the air.

Black Friday? You've got to be kidding, and this isn't the year for seeking out crushing crowds--unless you decide you really want whatever they've decided to call that nasty flu this week.

I do enjoy a wander in the shops, especially with a friend so I can share the fun, but I am not, never, ever, going shopping the day after Thanksgiving.

    Hurry up, COLD RIVER!

No crack of dawn shopping for me. I like to go out a few days after Christmas to buy my wrapping paper and ribbons for the next year. But mostly, that's just "downtime" to catch up with family. :-)

    Hugs,

Wow! Love the sunrise pic, all I need is my slippers and some hot tea!
We're always out of town on Thkgvg. Black Friday, I'm with Jayne, any excuse to shop. On Fri, hubby goes golfing with his Uncle and I get up and hit the stores. Why stay in a hotel room? I have a great time by myself and I'm out to the stores by 5 and back to the hotel by 10. Plenty of time to
go see family before heading home.

Oooo! Just found this blog and I'm very excited :)

I'm currently reading The Mist and loving it. Can't wait for Cold River.

I'm Canadian, so we've already had our Thanksgiving, and we don't have Black Friday. But, I wouldn't be out anyway - I'm not a big shopper. I always envy those who are their bargains, but it's not worth the chaos:)
