    Finding that Holiday Spirit

Well? Are you ready for the holidays? Cards all done? Decorations up, gifts bought and wrapped and...no! Don't hit me. I'm sorry...I know. It's not funny, is it? I was looking at Lori's blog post from a few days ago with her beautiful tree and the wrapped gifts all around, and then at Susan's with a perfect tree and the ornaments in place and my first thought was huh? It's DECEMBER?

I am SO not ready, even though I do love this time of year. My husband actually has the lights up on our blue spruce out in the front yard and I've got twinkly lights in houseplants all around the house, but I haven't bought a single gift and the only cards I've sent are the ones to a few of my fellow authors and business associates. I've got address labels printed for the family and friends cards, but haven't got the cards yet. I decided not to enclose a picture this year, which will make it easier. I figure we look the same--just a year older. I need to start thinking about the menu for the big dinner I'll be cooking, but that's still a couple weeks away, and I'm the queen of procrastination.

I think that once our son and his family arrive here next week from their home in Hawaii, it'll start feeling more like Christmas.

There's something about getting the family together that makes the holidays come to life. I remember the year our daughter was nineteen and had just gotten out of Air Force boot camp. Sarah got shipped off to Germany four days before Christmas. That was the hardest Christmas ever--the very first one when one of our children wasn't home, and it makes my heart go out to all of the people across the country who have loved ones serving overseas right now, because I know the holidays just aren't the same for you. It's like a big hole in your world when one is missing. I can't imagine ever getting used to it.
One thing today definitely nudged me closer to the season--my author copies of Wolf Tales 9 showed up on the doorstep! I didn't expect them for a couple of weeks, so the FedEx delivery was a wonderful surprise. I love the cover of this book--it's got a satiny finish that makes it feel alive, and since there's an almost naked guy on the cover, I keep catching myself stroking that gloriously sleek back of his. Luckily my husband is very understanding, though he does keep looking at me as if I've lost a marble or two.

What is it that makes you finally accept the fact that the holidays are coming and it's time to get into the spirit? The change in the weather? Lights going up on the neighbor's house, or is it all the decorations suddenly popping up in stores? (They were up before Halloween around here...just a bit too early for my taste!) I made fudge this week and suddenly realized I was humming Jingle Bells...it had to have been a subliminal reaction to all that chocolate!

And, by the way, this is the world's easiest recipe--melt a package of chocolate chips in the microwave, mix in a tub of that pre-made chocolate frosting, add a cup of chopped nuts and press it into a square baking pan lined with foil or plastic wrap. Chill it, cut it, and you can't tell the difference from the real thing! Try it--if nothing else has you finding your Christmas spirit, this is bound to do the trick!

    Hi Kate
Thanks for the recipe. My girls are going to love making it!
I figured it was holiday time when I started hearing Andy Williams and Dean Martin singing to me while I shopped.
Wow!! What a back on that boy =>
    Merry Christmas

    Hi Kate,
I know what you mean about family making the holidays come to life. I always miss my son so much during the holidays. He lives 3000 miles away and we get together a few times a year, but not during any of the big days like Thanksgiving and Christmas.
I am probably going to make it on time for Christmas with the gifts. I've been sewing every free moment.
Oh, I have to share with everyone that last night the almost six year old grandgirl used my sewing machine. She is making a pillow for her dad. At first she was trying to tell me it wouldn't work if we put the two "right" sides together to sew them. Then...When I showed her how it would turn rightside out she gasped and said, "Grandma, that's brilliant!" I don't think I have ever felt so accomplished as I did at that moment.
I love the cover of your book and I am glad you got the author copies early so you can stroke each one until your hubby calls the men in white coats on you.
    Happy holidays,
    Lynne Thomas

LOL....Catherine, when that cover showed up I just sat and grinned at it. Isn't it gorgeous? And as far as the fudge, I also made one batch with butterscotch chips, cream cheese frosting and those little Heath "butter brickle" bits instead of nuts. Absolutely delicious, and definitely easy for kid.

Lynne, what a really special moment with your granddaughter! That is just neat...and you ARE brilliant! That's tough with your son being so far away, though--we're so lucky that Jon and Mel get over here at least a couple of times a year--they stay with Melanie's parents because they've got more room, but we just take our motorhome down and park at their place and sort of move in! Luckily, our entire family gets along really well, so it's even more fun. Plus, the grandkids love to be together--Sarah's are 8, 5 and 3 and Jon's are almost 4 and 1, so it's wonderful to have them all together.

Oh, Kate, I know how you feel! I *still* haven't done a thing for Christmas, but this is right when the holiday cheer kicks in for me.

The recipe looks yummy as well as easy. :-)

Kate, what a gorgeous cover! That back definitely looks strokable.

This year the presents just came together for me. I don't get out shopping very often, but on the 1st of February on our annual ski trip, my s-i-l and best friend and I went into a little tourist town whose shops are either bustling or half empty. This year they were bustling and I came across a beautiful purse that just screamed my cousin Colleen's name.
Also around the beginning of the year, the soulmate spent a lot of time up in a little Alaskan village and he bought some of those ice grippers you strap on your boots after he'd fallen on his butt for the second time, and I thought what a great gift for my brothers and BFF's husband and ordered them while I was thinking about it (which for me is key--otherwise I get to Nov/Dec and wonder what the heck to get everyone). I also found a great deal for my Girl's Night Out group after Christmas last year when I wasn't looking.

'Course the November page on my calendar was bristling with post-its when I turned it over. Otherwise I would have forgotten all about my early purchases.

Carla, my husband and I are going out this morning to do some shopping, and I'm hoping SOMETHING will kick in! My email's been down for two days now (company going to a new system. Obviously they don't adhere to my "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy) and I'm getting frantic, knowing how much mail's going to land in my box when it finally works! Figure shopping has to be a better option.

Thanks, Susan. I've had some beautiful covers, but this one definitely wins. I just love it. I hear ya on the post it notes--where would we be without them? LOL...but I think you win the prize for getting shopping done early. I am SO impressed!!!

Well Kate, don't hate me but, the shopping done, wrapping done, decorations were up the day after Thanksgiving, and my Christmas cards are going in the mail tomorrow. OH and the fudge, puppy chow, cherry mash bars, peanut butter cups, spiced crackers, sugar cookies, mocha fudge cookies, and the spiced nuts are done. And to top it off, I'm done with school until January 18th. I guess I can just sit back and really take in the holiday and relax for a change. LOL!!! Want to hire me now as your secretary?

Egad, where did the time go? I've got a book coming out Dec. 29th and I admit that does tend to distract a tad from holiday prep. However, we'll be with relatives down in California this year and when we actually get there, it will feel like Christmas

Hope the weather improves before you get here, Jayne! It's cold and drippy out right now--my book comes out the 29th as well! And, it's our son's birthday, so we're all going to be going out to dinner that night in Healdsburg. I'll make sure we raise a toast to FIRED UP along with WOLF TALES 9 and Jon's birthday!

Have a safe trip and a wonderful holiday.

That's the bittersweet part of the holidays--it's always a time to remember loved ones we've lost. My father died shortly after Christmas many years ago, but I still find myself thinking of him so much at this time of year and wishing he was still with us.

I'm sorry for your loss, but I do hope you enjoy the season. Thanks for stopping by, and take care.

I choose to believe Susan's and Lori's photos are from last year and they are really just running around like the rest of us! ha! Over the years I have slipped from being super organized to "I can't find the Christmas cards I bought and have to go buy new ones". Some how, every year, it all comes together by Christmas day. That is the only thought that keeps me sane. Last Sunday our pastor gave a sermon on not stressing out over the hloidays. My thought was "he's a guy, what does he know about it!" I then remembered he has 6 kids and his wife is pregnant and due in a few weeks, bet there is lots of stress at his house!

Ya know, Janie...I hadn't thought about that! Susan? Lori? Ya wanna fess up, ladies?

And you are so right about the guy thing, though imagine your pastor IS feeling a bit of the holiday stress with a growing brood like that, but in our household, I do the Christmas shopping, the cooking, the cards, the decorating and all the planning PLUS try to meet my writing deadlines. My husband is retired, so I put him to work sticking labels on about a thousand postcards I'm sending out after the first of the year. He's been whimpering all week about how much work it is! I may have to do this to him more often...

Janie: How smart you are--of course those photos are from last year.

Kate--Lovely cover only the guy IS naked. Great recipe only, what do you mean by "can't tell the difference from the real thing?" It's chocolate, taste like fudge and you eat it, right? That's as real as it needs to get:)

Pretty lights really do it for me--I love to look at people's decorated trees and the decorations outside houses. When I was a kid and our tree (when not 13' tall) stood in the front window and my happiest moments were of walking up the street and seeing the sparkle in that window.

    Stella
And, no, I don't have much done.

Stella, I love the way you think. I grew up making fudge from scratch--cooking chocolate and a bunch of other stuff that ended up tasting exactly like this stuff I can whip up in minutes! Amazing...and every bit as fattening, so it's go to be "real!"

I'm supposed to be getting so much done today. Not doing it. Watching the rain come down and the occasional hail. Totally unproductive, but certainly feels good!

Christmas...oh yeah...I have all the decorations up all my cards are sent out and the packages have been mailed. Now I just have to make dinner and feed my family on teh 24th. We are having dinner on christmas eve as usual, so me and my family can have the day to ourselves at home.

LOVE that recipe, Kate! Thanks. I'm all about easy these days. LOL

Your lights look fantastic. We had high winds here that removed some shingles from the barn AND played havoc with my decorations. Today, if it stops raining, I'll have to go out and "fix" everything. Bleh. Crazy Ohio weather!

Merry, Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Mary, you are such a show off! LOL...so glad you're enjoying Wolf Tales, though. I love writing that series. Absolute escapism!! We do our Christmas the 24th, too, so the grandkids can all be home in their beds when Santa comes.

Wow, Lori! I read about your storms, but didn't realize it was blowing that hard where you are! Send husband out to fix stuff...sounds like guy work. And yeah, easy works for me, too, but this stuff is delicious!!! I swear I've gained five pounds since I discovered the recipe.

Thanks, Kate for the easy recipe. It looks pretty no-fail, except lately when we were melting choc. chips for some pretzels they smelled like they were burning. Maybe they were old. I still want to try it, though. I guess I will go get some new choc. chips. Merry Christmas!! -- Rebecca

    Blogger Kate Douglas said...

Rebecca, when you melt the chips in the microwave, run it on high for one minute and check them. They may still hold their shape, but be soft enough to stir. If not, give them another 30 seconds, max. They melt really fast!

Thanks, Kate! My kids were melting the choc. chips, but I appreciate the info. Now I know.
