It's beginning to look a lot like...

    Photobucket

Are you scooting right along with the holiday spirit, or are you resisting it in a big way?

I went to the hairdressers a few days ago - way overdue by the way - and my stylist was not in the holiday mood. LOL. Like many of us, she had divided-family issues, too many places to visit, too much indecision, and too many responsibilities to too many people. In other words, lots of STRESS. I felt bad for her, and we ended up laughing about a lot of holiday snafus and how to remedy them.

For years now I've tried to set up my contracts to leave me free for December. The few times I've had a book due in late December or January, I've about gone nuts.

You see, there's a whole lotta stuff I do just because I want to. For instance, I LOVE to decorate the outside of the house, and the inside! And now I also decorate the pond.

My pictures are a little dark and don't show details well, but here's how much of it looks:

    Photobucket
House first, and then the pond... it looks really pretty from the street. :-)

Do you like to decorate? Is it inside and out, or something else?

This year has been funny because of the "helpers" I've had. My four-year old (very adorable!) grandson helped me decorate inside. I'd put 4 ornaments on the tree, and he'd take off 3 to examine them more closely.
I'd put a snowman on a shelf, and he'd take it down to sit it by another snowman so it wouldn't be lonely. :-) We did finally get it done, but he's over-using all the holidays gadgets that sing and play music. I think I might have to hide some of them!

Oh, and the animals! The cats crawl beneath the Christmas tree and pretend they're in the jungle... or something. Even after the presents went under there, they didn't give up. They just crush things. Which is okay, since there's nothing breakable at risk, and honestly, I enjoy their antics just like I enjoy my grandson.

    Photobucket
Can you see the kitty under there? That's KiKi, the only female.
Look right above the green box.

    Photobucket
And there's Liger, the 23lb cat. All you see sometimes are pairs of glowing eyes!

Kiki and Liger have golden yellow eyes, but Gremlin, the only cat not interested in the tree, has the most amazing emerald eyes that, even though this has nothing to do with the holidays, I have to share a funny photo of him.

    Photobucket
Like a true Scrooge, he's giving raspberries to all holiday fanfare. :-)

Ages ago, my husband and I decided to have Christmas Eve at our house. I'm a control freak, and if I'm doing things, then they get done how and when I want. When I send out Christmas cards to family (mine are going out today) I include info on what time we'll celebrate Christmas Eve. I make it early - around 3pm - every year, which leaves everyone free to attend the more traditional, later plans with other family. But for anyone who wants to stay, we keep the fun going for hours. On average we get between 40 and 60 people.

Do you have a regular place you go, or like me, do you have everyone to your house?

The last few years we've cooked lasagna, pork roast (with sauerkraut and without) and ham. We also supply fruit salad, mac & cheese, rolls, mashed potatoes, and deviled eggs. Some family members bring assorted desserts, and my wonderful Mother in law always brings potato salad, baked beans and green beans.

Do you have a regular holiday meal that you cook, or that you eat at someone else's house?

Christmas Day is open for people to visit us and for us to visit them. Easy-peezy, right? Well, it is now that our kids are grown. When they were young, hubby worked 3rd shift and by the end of Christmas he would have been without sleep for days. He did it, but it sure wore on him.
These days, Christmas is relaxed compared to the chaos of young kids. I love it.
My cards are going out today.
My gifts are all bought and, other than a few things that haven't yet arrived by mail, everything is wrapped and under the tree (or on the living room couch, so I can keep it sorted.)
My Christmas CDs are getting plenty of play time.
    Everything is decorated.

So tell me, are you scrambling, taking it easy, making solid headway, or ignorning it all? LOL

***As one of those things that I did "just because," I wrote a FREE Holiday story for my readers - my gift to you! The info went out in my newsletter, but I'll dish here too. If you want to read it, go to either of my websites for a link on the home page. It's called CHRISTMAS CANDI and I had a blast writing it, so I hope you enjoy reading it.

Whatever your holiday plans, I wish you health, happiness and peace this holiday season!

Hi Lori-my Christmas insanity is similar to yours. I too host a Christmas eve family get-together, but everyone brings food so I don't have to do all the cooking.
I read your free Christmas story yesterday. Loved it! I still can't figure out how you can pull me into a short story so quickly! (Someday, maybe I'll get the hang of that LOL)
    Merry Christmas!

You have *that* much done and it's only December 4th????? I've put together six pieces of the Christmas puzzle. Oh, and I bought Christmas cards. I'm on deadline (next week) and have a book out, but still.

What a gorgeous cat...and those Christmas lights. Fantastic!! I'm inspired at least to go buy a wreath today...

Lisa, you are SUCH a fabulous writer that I bet you're a whiz at short stories. I admit I enjoy them. For me, they're like a walk in the park after a single title, which feels like a trek up the mountainside. LOL

    Carla,
I'm a person who freaks if I don't things done in advance. My house needs a really good going over to reorganize every closet and maybe even every drawer. LOL But I'll get to that later.
After buying some new sweaters and sweatshirts, I can't fit anything else in my closet! Time to move out the warm weather duds.

It helps that I LOVE this season so much. It rejuvenates me.

And hey, if I had a looming deadline and a book out, I'd be frazzled beyond measure, trust me!
    Good luck with everything.

Congratulations on getting so much done for Christmas! Usually, I am pretty much on track and fairly unstressed for the holidays each year, but this year is the year I am behind on everything. I still don't have all my energy back from having pneumonia in early November. Who knew what a kick in the butt that would be? It put me waaaaaay behind on my sewing. I am going to make the grandgirls gifts first and then, if I don't get to all the adults' gifts in time, they can just suck it up. They know I love them.
Our tradition has become one of sharing time with family and friends over at my daughter's house. This year, however, we have suddenly been getting invitations from all kinds of "adult" friends (you know the ones who have grown or no kids and like to have cocktails and conversation about worldly concepts that don't involve toddler issues) and we've had a lot of fun with them, too. My daughter pretends to be jealous that we are going somewhere other than her house occasionally, but she's really jealous of the grown-up conversation without the squeals in her ear.LOL!
Thanks so much for the holiday story. You know I always look forward to holiday anthologies with you in them.

Your lights are awesome. We're getting our tree, decorating and putting up the outside lights this weekend. I've got the majority of the shopping done--primarily because I ran into things early, early in the year that I knew would be perfect for so and so and had the foresight to actually buy them. Got more to do, but I just turned in my book, so I feel like all the pressure is off.

    Cool blog!

Nice to meet another control freak.. When I plan something I want every thing to go just right..Of course this sets me up for a downfall some where. I was having a bit of a problem getting into the holiday spirit, but things are shaping up and it looks like two groups of extended family our coming for a visit in the next couple of weeks. SO I will have to get the house (inside) deocorated by the weekend.. The outside is done by the landlords and it looks great.
Now I just have to plan the menu's. One is coming for dinner, the other for afternoon Tea.. All this planning will help to move me into the spirit.

Gorgeous pictures, Lori! I'm not even close to being in the spirit yet. We do our Christmas on Christmas Eve and now, instead of at our house, we're at our daughter's because hers is larger and more centrally located. I still do all the cooking, which is something I love--menu this year is a whole top sirloin roast (herbed and oiled the day before--absolutely scrumptious!) baked salmon, roasted/marinated potatoes and veggies, broccoli torte and fresh string beans. I don't usually do desserts, but someone always brings plenty--I think there are going to be between 25-40 for dinner. Will have to get a headcount before I shop for groceries!

Because of my husband's allergies to artificial scents and the molds on Christmas trees, we no longer do much indoor decorating. Lots of lights, though, in all the houseplants and on a big blue spruce out in front. I'm making Christmas wreaths today as gifts for a few family and friends as well as our own front door, and then, unfortunately, it's back to work. I have both a January and February deadline. :-(

Gorgeous pics! I would love to have lights outdoors, but instead I put a string of lights around my storm door (on the inside and I attach them with suction cup hooks).
When I was married I used to go to my SIL's house Christmas Eve. Now it's just me and I stay home. I'll watch "Christmas Story" or other holiday shows.

Hi Lori and all - I'm moving along nicely with the holiday plans. Outside decorations went live last night, cards in the mail today, tree going up tonight along with indoor decorations.

What I haven't finished is shopping. What I haven't started is my Christmas baking and what I really need to be doing now is gift wrapping. LOL!

Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy holiday season:-)

Great pics, Lori. I don't have anything started for Christmas - cards not done, haven't started shopping and no tree. Our son Bart got married last Sat. and our focus was on the wedding. I need to get busy, that's for sure.

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your loved ones! Btw, your decorations are beautiful inside and out.

    Lori,

I love the photos!!! I especially love down by the pond - that must be such a great view from the house.

This year, I want to decorate more outside. I put up garland and a few bows on the front deck, and my brother will turn the main house lights on 12 days before Christmas (that's his big thing). I'd like to get some outside lights for the deck too, but don't know if that will happen this year....... NExt year, I would like to decorate a tree or two in the front yard but shhh, don't tell my brother as he is a scrooge.

I am hoping to get some inside the house decorating this weekend but it is a busy weekend. Tomrrow, I have some Christmas shopping with a friend and then a staff Christmas party. Sunday, I have a fundraising day with my students for out Europe trip. Mind you, I can't wait to see how my kittens react to the new decorations. I will definitely be taking pictures!

Christmas is a low key event at my house. I live with my brother and neither of us have significant others or children. My extended family isn't close so it will be a quiet time. However, I have some great plans with friends and family over the holidays, which to me is the definite purpose.

Whee, Ms Lori...you are so far ahead of us. Haven't even started yet. Your decorations are gorgeous.

In our younger days with cats we had to tie the top of the tree so that they couldn't tip it over ( after the 2nd time)

Susan, after turning in the book, I'd take a week to celebrate and to heck with planning! LOL. I'm glad you had a lot of shopping done in advance though. That's always a huge time saver.

Kathleen, we control freaks need to stick together! LOL. Happy Holidays to you!

LOL, Louis. I keep waiting for a catastrophe with our tree, but so far the cats are content to hang out at the bottom.

I love the pictures. I live in a village w/ some homes on a lake & it is pretty much a given that they all have lights which reflect off the lake. I am not a big decorator myself, but I am inspired to get started. We also have to think about my middle child's birthday. He will be turning 9 four days before Christmas, but he doesn't seem to mind. We try to celebrate it earlier.I am also too much of a cat lover not to say something about those pictures. They definitely have their own personalities. I have my own story about my cat that used to sit in my box of Carla Neggers books when she was pregnant. I got to deliver all six kittens. I know some of you have heard this before. She was young & I had to tie & cut off the cords. Three of the kittens are in one home & 8 mos later they all want to give me kisses.

    Hi Lori
Love the lights. Can I just come hang out at the pond?
One of my fav parts of Christmas time is my Andy Williams CD. He's from my Mom's generation, but after always hearing him while I worked retail, I decided it's not Christmas time until I hear him on muzak.
Now, I always pull the CD out and play it loud. My girls-11/13, don't care for it. As I was watching TV the other day, "Happy Holidays" came on and I started to sing. My 11yo ran up and changed the channel. It's become somewhat of a joke with her. Joke or not, she'll always think of me when she hears it. =)
Off to read your free story, thanks!
    Merry Christmas,
    Catherine

I'm not really into the whole Christmas holiday, but because of my family I usually decorate the inside of the house, put up the tree's and all that.

    I don't listen to christmas music..I don't like it. Yeah, I know...bah humbug...lol

My family drives me nuts this time of year with the fighting of who will go where, who doesn't want to be around who and all that.

We usually have my entire family at my house for dinner on christmas eve and we stay home by ourselves on christmas taking it easy.

I love the pictures of your cats, there are too sweet and your decorations are beautiful.

Rebecca, how sweet is that? I'm sure Carla is flattered. LOL. A cat we used to have ages ago wanted to give birth on my husband's shoes. THere was no dissuading her! She was a wonderful cat - so we let her. LOL

Oh Kris, your holidays- all of them - will be so much richer with a grandbaby! I LOVE it. I'm so happy for you and yours. Keep us posted on the news of the birth!

Catherine, that's what I do with Neil Diamond. The kids (when younger and living at home) would complain that right after Thanksgiving, I'd dig out the holiday tapes. (It was tapes back then, not CDs. LOL. I've since upgraded!)

Mary, I wish no one had the stress of dividing up family time. I've told my boys that I'd love for them to be here for Xmas eve, but if a significant other needs them to be elsewhere, I'll understand. I don't ever want them stuck trying to please everyone. I wish you lots of peace and quiet for your holiday!

I am kinda like your hairdresser this year. I am so not in the holiday mood. I did get my decorations up today so maybe that will help.

I think a lot of my mood is tied to my dad this year. Last year it was all new with him being in the nursing home, this year its that way it is. But I am grateful he is at a wonderful place.

Lori, you are a little over-achiever. Shame on you for putting some of us to shame... But I forgive you because I love the pictures, especially the cats. Gremlin's eyes are amazing, but all three cats are sweeties.

So you wrote a Christmas story as a gift, did you? Well, well, you obviously don't have enough to do. I will be off to the website to pick up my gift, however.

What do I love to do most at Christmas? Midnight mass and walk on the beach, preferably while a gigantic storm is in progress.

We are promised 60ft waves tomorrow so the beach is already closed. We'll have to climb a hill with our binoculars to get the very best view possible.

Your house looks fantastic--I love Christmas decorations.
