    Back in Black

    Banner BIB bigger

Feb 2nd is the release of my single title, BACK IN BLACK. I've got my fingers and toes crossed (and sometimes my eyes too) hoping that readers will enjoy the story!

For anyone who read the previous books in the SBC fighter series, this is Drew Black's story. He's the president of the SBC organization, and he's a real character.

    Here's the back cover blurb:

SBC president Drew Black is as controversial as they come. But the hot-headed entrepreneur is a perfect match for his popular sports club venture: uncompromising and extreme. Maybe too extreme. With a reputation for saying what he thinks, Drew's been causing a lot of friction. That's why someone's been called in to clean up his image—before he does any permanent damage.

The lucky lady is Gillian Noode, a PR expert who's smoothed out the rough edges on many a man. But Drew is rougher than anyone she's ever met, and he refuses to change for any woman, for any reason. To make matters more complicated, Gillian's starting to like him raw. Now, opposites aren't only attracting, they're igniting. But in the rising heat, which one of them will end up on top?

Yes, before anyone asks, Gillian gets teased about her last name, Noode. She's used to that. What she isn't used to is a guy like Drew. He's someone who doesn't give a flip what anyone else thinks of him. He trusts his instincts and has complete confidence in his ability to make good - even great - decisions, in business and out. Of course, Gillian finds out that appearances can be deceiving, because Drew is also a caring, responsible, giving person too. But... yeah, he's far from perfect!

Hubby loves to help with my promo stuff, and he's pretty much taken over the book trailer stuff. He came up with the idea for the BACK IN BLACK trailer, incorporating an interview (from the Get Together last June, when I was plenty worn out from prep work!) with the actual storyline of the book.

I wanted to post an excerpt, but... well, Drew has a very foul mouth and I couldn't find anything I considered appropriate to this blog. LOL. If you're interested, pretty please go here to read an excerpt:

RT Magazine gave the book 4.5 stars and said:

    HOT!
Foster's latest is pure entertainment and a joy to read. Drew and Gillian are adversarial at first, but they soon develop a delightful back-and-forth relationship.

The secondary romance has likable characters in Brett and Audrey, whose relationship is a true pleasure to follow. Cat aficionados will delight in Brett's relationship with his pet.

As you can see, the book is on the cover. I thought the model made a very nice magazine cover. LOL. What do you think?

You can read the interview I did for RT by going here:

Michelle Buonfiglio discuss (in part) BACK IN BLACK in her blog, Unabashedly Bookish, with BN.
    http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/Unabashedly-Bookish/Type-Dirty-to-Me/ba-p/462476

I like for really stubborn characters to find a special someone for whom they WANT to change. But I also like that special someone to realize that too much changing isn't necessary.

So, knowing that Drew Black has a foul mouth and doesn't really curb it for anyone, I'm curious...
What do you think of characters who curse?
If it fits the character and makes sense within in the book, does it bother you?

Does it bother you in real life, or only if someone goes overboard?

Whatever books you're reading this February, I hope you find a lot of enjoyment!
    All my best,

    LORI

Ooh, this one looks great, Lori! And I envy you that fabulous title. The characters are perfect for each other. I love the contrast of the PR expert and the rough-edged man she's supposed to change. In this case the language sounds like it fits the character. That's all that matters, as far as I'm concerned.

Looking forward to it! I'll be sorry to see the end of the fighter series, it's been a great one!

Sad to see this series end, but I know it's time for you to move on. You have such a creative mind.

Drew's mouth doesn't bother me, I've known people like him. That is, the profanity was simply a part of their nature. That being said, it does bother me when some one uses profanity for the shock factor and/or attention. I find that offensive.

Good Luck with Back in Black. I'm sure it will be a bestseller.

    Hi Lori,

I saw the book at Borders this past Tuesday and picked it up. Was it released early for a reason?

Either way, I love the characters; Drew Black is my favorite hero so far. And I agree with Jayne about the language.

Sad to see this series end, and looking forward to your new one!

Lori - I am well into the second book & I love it. The language in books & movies used to be a big turn off for me & I thought "they" ruined it. Now I am much more tolerant of it. Really what bothers me the most is hearing my kids say this stuff, but they have heard some of it from us. We're all good at spouting off our mouths. I loved what Stella said. She doesn't say this stuff, but some of her characters do. The language must not be a turn off for too many because all of you have audiences waiting for the books.

Lori - I should clarify "at home". I have been saying home is where we let it all hang out. If we can't air our dirty laundry there, then where can we? I try to behave myself in public & the teachers tell me I have nice kids. Have a great day!!

Lori, my "pre-order" of Back in Black showed up early, so I've read this one and honestly think it's the best in the series. I love Drew, mouth and all. He reminds me of the guy who's been married to my husband's favorite cousin for almost forever--I adore John but he's got a mouth on him that would peel paint, and the biggest heart of any man I've ever known. Sometimes that foul mouth can be a cover for the world's biggest softie. It's amazing how quickly you can learn to ignore the language when you truly love the person inside.

    Lori,

I'm really excited about this book! In real life, cursing, in context doesn't bother me (eg, if someone realizes they baked with tablespoons instead of teaspoons, or a ladder is dropped on a foot--I expect and exclamation).

Cursing in front of children, or using the F word as a daily part of conversation is a major turn off.

In fiction, I don't mind male leads who curse if it is in character. For whatever reason, I expect it with fighters, athletes, and military/safety forces. I expect it with guys talking to guys. That said, I have a double standard with female leads--I expect them to have to use their words, so to speak, rather than turn the F word into verbs, adjectives and adverbs. I want my female lead to be, hmmm, smarter than that.

Feb. 2 is marked on my calendar. That's when your book should arrive on my Kindle. :-)

I believe a character has to do what fits. Some characters are natural potty mouths. Others wouldn't say sh!t if their mouth was full of it.

Whatever fits. Just don't bore me, which you never do!

Cursing doesn't bother me as long as it fits the emotion of the character and the scene.
With release date of the 2nd this means there will be copies at RAD?

I can't wait to read this.

Cursing really doesn't bother me that much. If it fits the character it fits.

I don't like when it seems that is the only word they know. I watched a movie once that I started counting how many times the f word was used. It had no point being used that much. LOL

Wahoo. Can't wait for this one to come out. I am on a budget diet...but I plan on squeezing enough money out to pick up Back in Black!

Cursing doesn't bother me unless it is unnecessarily excessive. It can be absolutely appropriate in a certain context and from a certain voice. I must admit, though, I do not enjoy cursing when people do it to demean or marginalize others.

A funny story about cursing. I catch students cursing in class and correct their languge. I once corrected a student and his response was "Ms. MacDonald, you can't tell me you didn't curse when you broke your foot!." Without a beat, I answered, "Absolutely. And when you fall down stairs and break your foot in this classroom, you can swear all you want. Until then? Watch your language."

    He laughed. ;)

Oooh, sounds great, Lori! You've been busy!!
Language should fit the character -- that's all I care about. If your guy said "oh, shoot," or somesuch it'd probably stick out for me more than if he curses. ;-)

Good luck with the book. I'm looking forward to it!

Aack!!!! I've been waiting for the next SBC book. I have loved these books. I'm sorry to see them end.
I can live without the foul mouth stuff in life. Yes, I let some slip sometimes, but there are a couple words I just can't bring myself to say.
In books, yes, it fits some characters. That being said, excess use of the "f bomb" does get on my nerves. Will that stop me from reading the book, hasn't yet.
    Happy February =)

    Thank you everyone!
My apologies for not replying sooner, and for not replying individually. I headed down to Tenn to see some lakefront property, and blundered right into one of their very few blizzards. About an hour from Jackson (our destination) it got really, really bad. There were semi trucks off the road, flipped over, crashed, bent in half, in ditches. There was an ambulance overturned and destroyed with police all around it. Cars were off the road everywhere! Visibility sucked. But there was no place to go at that point except to continue on. Turning around wasn't an option.
We made it to the hotel 3 hours later (taking 2 hours longer than it should at that point, turning a 6 hour trip into 8 1/2) and the roads are so bad that we can't even see the lakefront property! LOL
At least the hotel is nice and has free coffee. ;-) Not sure when we'll head home. We'll wait for some road clean-up to be done. What a trip!

    Hugs,

    Lori

Joan, I often have the double standard with women leads too. I think I expect more of women, given we're mostly superior. LOL

My quill sisters, thank you!!! You ladies rock.

Jennifer, thank you! I'm not at all sure why the book was out early. It shouldn't have been, and as an author, it bums me bigtime. But I'm thrilled that you enjoyed it!

    Hugs to all,

Hey Kate, we're home again, safe and sound, and I don't think I want to venture out again any time soon! LOL. Once we got to KY, the roads were fairly clear for long stretches. But TN? They really need to learn how to deal with the snow! LOL.
It was certainly a distraction, I'll say that.

I have no idea who the guy is on the cover - some random model, far as I know. But he is fine, huh?
Many of the UFC fighters look like that, but some don't. Sometimes a fighter has a body that's totally deceiving. LOL. I think a lot of it is genetics.

    Genevieve,
I'm sorry to see it end too, but I think (for now at least) I've stretched my brain as far as I can for the fighters. ;-) If another really engaging story grabs me, I'd write it, but it wouldn't be for awhile.
I'll be hard at work on my new series at HQN for awhile now. In 2011, I'm going to have 3 back to back releases with them, and I HOPE you like that series just as much!

    Hugs,

I purchased the book last week from B & N and read it over the weekend. Just finished Back in Black and really enjoyed it. You know at first you notice the cursing, but since it is so much apart of the character...I didn't notice so much after the first chapter. I think that is my favorite of the fighter series too. Thanks Lori!

I will definitely be getting this book, as I do all Lori Foster books. And I know I will enjoy it. That said, I don't use rough language myself and I'm not around people very often who do, so it really stands out to me. It's more bearable in print, though; I guess I can skim over it there. I also understand the point about it being a part of the character and his/her history. I've only stopped reading one romance author because of the language in her books, and that was because it felt that she was using very ugly language as a shortcut to creating a rugged character, rather than doing the work of rounding him out in other ways. I do think I read more historicals than contemporaries in part because the language tends to be much milder.
