    A case of nerves...

Note: Kate asked us to let you know that she's currently snowed in under a foot of snow and has no internet service, so she won't be able to respond to comments for awhile!
    (Power's on...I'm BACK!)

I'm sitting here in my office watching the snow fall and realizing that time seems to pass by a lot faster the older I get! It seemed like the release of my very first mass market paranormal romance was at least a gazillion years in the future, and now it's just a month away and I'm beginning to panic. What's funny is that this is far from my first book, and yet it's such an important step for me as I work at moving my career forward, that I'm sort of quietly freaking out about the whole thing.

Help me, ladies! I really need to put this in perspective!! I've had seventeen books out in the past four years alone, and not a one of them has made me as nervous as DemonFire's upcoming release. I think it's the distribution, to be honest, the fact that this one should show up in WalMart and Target and the grocery store where my neighbors shop--places where I've always bought books. I was actually doing okay for awhile, and then my video trailer arrived and reminded me that the release date is coming close...I do love trailers. Not sure if they actually sell books, but they are definitely cool! I had mine done by COS--take a look:
    video

I have the first chapter of the book posted on my website if you'd like to take a look, and if you're the type who likes to preorder, I've got all kinds of ordering links on that page. (Gee, it's so unseemly to whimper, isn't it? I really REALLY need to relax or the next month is going to kill me!)

Anyway, if you get a chance I do hope you'll take a look at the excerpt, and if you'd like just a short taste, this will give you a feel for the dynamics between my heroine, Eddy Marks, a small-town newspaper reporter who does NOT believe in demons or anything at all to do with the paranormal, and Dax, a fallen demon, too good for hell, who's been given one week to save the world from demonkind and, just maybe, earn himself a spot in paradise.

Eddy couldn’t sit still any longer. She bounced to her feet and began pacing around the small living room. “Lemurians. They’re not real, unless you ask Dad.” She spun around and laughed. “He’s going to be thrilled when he finds out about you. Proof that some of his crazy theories are actually true.” Dax and the demons, she thought. It didn’t get any better.

“According to local lore, they’re a race of mystical beings, tall, beautiful people with strange powers who supposedly live inside Mount Shasta in rooms made of gold. Legend says they’re descendants of people from the lost continent of Lemuria that sank beneath the sea, that they had advanced science and technology thousands of years ago. They were even supposed to have flying machines, sort of like the old Atlantis myth.”

Dax shook his head. He twisted around in his seat so he could follow her erratic pacing. “Atlantis is no myth. It really existed and its descendents are still around. I’ve never heard of Lemuria. I’ll need to look into it. The vortex, though, is definitely real. How do you think I got here?”

Eddy stopped in her tracks and stared at him, looking for a twitch, a smile, anything to tell her he was teasing.

    He wasn’t.

She glanced at Willow. As if the sprite knew she was being watched, she flashed bright blue and just as quickly faded.

Okay. Point made. Eddy took a deep breath. “Why don’t you tell me exactly how you did get here. Just promise to ignore me if I look incredulous.”

Dax stared at her for a long, slow moment. Then he shook his head and his gorgeous lips turned up in an unbelievably sexy grin. “Eddy Marks, I doubt I could ever ignore you...not for any reason.”

She felt it right between her thighs. A hot lick of heat that had no business firing her senses and making her muscles clench, especially after a hokey come-on like that. It took a tremendous amount of will to continue gazing directly into those smoldering eyes of his. Demon’s eyes. She had to remind herself that, for all his appeal, Dax was not only a stranger, he’d already admitted to being one of the bad guys.

“I’m waiting,” she said, planting her hands on her hips, ignoring his innuendo and her body’s traitorous response.

He still had that cocky grin plastered on his gorgeous face, but at least Dax settled back against the couch. “I was a demon. An immortal in a world of evil. It suited me for a long time, and then it didn’t.” He shrugged. “For some reason, I began to question the life, the constant desire to cause pain, to kill.” He shook his head, shrugged. Gave her a self-deprecating grin. “I guess I learned the hard way. One does not question evil. I got tossed out of Abyss.”

The snake tattoo crawling out of his waistband slowly writhed across his belly and chest. Mesmerized, Eddy blinked. She must be more exhausted than she’d realized.

The subtle motion stopped. The tattoo stayed put. She swallowed and raised her eyes. It was too unsettling to steal even the quickest glance at his body, not when things like that happened. “Where does a demon go that’s worse than hell?”

Dax ran his fingers lightly over his tattoo. Had he felt it move? He stared at her for a moment before he answered.

    “Earth.”

So, there you have it--when I first began working on The DemonSlayers series, I was terrified--the books are bigger than my Wolf Tales--120,000 words compared to around 85,000, which is a huge difference when you're juggling plot threads and characters and have the memory of a flea. My office looked like I'd had a "post it note" snowstorm by the time I finished the last page! I had to keep reminding myself that if I can keep over thirty characters through 20 books (Wolf Tales/Sexy Beast) straight, this shouldn't be a problem, but trust me, I can make trouble where none should be found!

Anyway, I do hope you'll take a chance on the book, and if you do, please let me know what you think! Also, I'm planning on a contest--not sure yet what the prize will be, but I'm asking readers who see DemonFire in out-of-the-way stores or cool displays, if they'll take a photo and send it to me with the date and where you see it. I'm going to post them on my Facebook page, just for fun.

What made me think of doing that was when I was shopping in Hardester's, the grocery store in our tiny little town of Cobb, California the other day and saw Jayne's paperback release of Running Hot. All I could think was, DAMN! She's in HARDESTER'S? I mean, if your book makes it to Hardesters, it must be just about everywhere!

Oh, and while I'm talking about contests, I was talking to my buddy Robyn Carr the other day--she's guest blogged here before and I know a lot of you are hooked on her Virgin River series. Anyway, her publisher is running a contest that sounds like fun--the winner will get their name in a new Virgin River book! If you want to be immortalized forever in a bestselling book, Robyn's got a link on her website.

I think that's about it for now--time to go back to chewing my non-existent fingernails and writing Wolf Tales 11--thank goodness I've got a full schedule so I can't spend too much time whining. Besides, at least around our place, no one really pays attention to me anyway! Take care all, and be safe. While I've been working on this blog, we've gotten at least two more inches of snow!

Don't worry, Kate. We are all going to be reading your books for a long while. I tell everyone who loves sexy romance about your books and I have a very big mouth.
Hey, at least you got snow! We in the Seattle area have not had snow this year : (.

Believe me, it will be great to see your books in all the big box stores! Only now all your friends will know what kind of kinky stuff you write!!!

    On your team,

Hi Kate - I'm sure this worrying is doing no earthly good. This is exciting news & makes me want to read your books all the more. I have already said I want to read books by all of you this year. I absolutely love coming to this website & seeing what's going on. I hope you can try to relax somehow, but I do understand the nerve thing. In my family we all fit into the nervous category. I know I'm ok, so I don't go into major panic attacks. I think this book release will greatly increase your fans. If I could give you a hug I would, but hopefully those around you will do so unless they think it's best to steer clear! LOL!

We've got power! FINALLY--about 36 hours without lights, heat, and Internet has reminded me that I would make a really crappy pioneer! Added to that the fact my husband's back is out which meant little 'ole me out shoveling snow and chopping firewood, and you get my drift, but it sure feels good to be back in this century!

Linda, thank you! Dax was really fun to write and the snake tattoo even gave me the creeps writing it--it kept trying to crawl off his body and kill him. Not sure what part of my sick mind came up with that!

Thank you Brandy! I sure hope you enjoy it. I can't wait to see what readers have to say about it.

Lynne, we rarely get more than five or six inches of snow, even in a big storm. There was about a foot on the ground this morning, and without power it was really hard to keep the house warm. Plus, I've got a blasted head cold, so I think I was even grumpier than my husband with his bad back! I swear we're beginning to feel like the curmudgeonly couple of walking wounded! Btw, I LOVE you and your big mouth, Lynne! Thank you so much!!!

Rebecca, I think I was born to worry. If there's not something to really worry about, I can create something. I swear, it's a gift!!! I do hope this book brings in new readers. We shall see!

Hi Jennifer--I wondered if you made it back after you said you were stuck when they closed Tehachapi--Californians do NOT deal with with snow, do we? :-) Thanks! Glad you liked the excerpt.

Mary, I read a study once on book buying habits, and grocery stores and places like Walmart and Target so a lot of books because of the lower prices, but also because buyers can hide their purchases within their regular shopping. I guess it's okay to buy a twelve-pack of Bud, but don't let anyone see you buying a BOOK!

Thank you Lori. I wanted to tell you that I'd pre-ordered Back in Black and it showed up in yesterday's mail! I was shocked when it showed up with my Barnes & Noble order--didn't expect it until next month. And I'm with you...thank goodness the power is back.

Please don't be nervous. Everyone is going to love this book--and the cover is a real eye-catcher. Great excerpt!

Thanks, Gillian. I do love the cover, and the video. I think it's just the fact that I actually wrote the book a year ago and it seemed so far away, then, before it would be coming out. Now all of a sudden it's TIME!

For me buying a book when grocery shopping is just convenient because I'm already there and if a book is there that I want to read, I'll buy it since I'm allready buying other stuff.

Mary, that's the same for me. The closest bookstore (that carries genre books) is over an hour away. The grocery store is much more convenient, as is the local Walmart. In fact, I've gotten to the point where I do a lot of ordering online if there are particular stories I want.

Thanks, Catherine! The tattoo is really icky--it's cursed and keeps trying to kill Dax, but Eddy has the power to control it, something that totally shocks her!

    Hello Kate:

I think the collywobbles are about--big time. The snow and having power go in and out won't help much.

You are inspired. There are moments when you know it but, unfortunately, longer periods when you're convinced you're a sham and can't write at all.

Take it from an addicted reader--you are inspired, Kate. Everything is going to be just fine. We can't order the vagaries of distribution but we can be determined to get a book we want. And we all want this one:)

Stella, you are such a sweetie, and I thank you. Why is it we all go through that period of, "Who do I think I'm fooling and when are they going to find out I haven't got a clue what I'm doing?" stuff?

Of course, the fact I'm doing something that I absolutely love might be why I still have trouble believing it's all true! DON'T pinch me--I don't wanna wake up!

Take a deep breath. Let it out slowly. Repeat ten times.

If you're still jiggy, chop wood. ;-)

There's nothing an author can do to make up for what a publisher won't/can't do.

You've got dedicated, talkative readers. They'll spread the good word.

Are you coming out on Kindle? I'll wrestle with small print on a tight paperback if I have to, but would MUCH rather use the Kindle!

Relax, darlin'. For you the fun is just beginning. :-)

Heh, heh, I got to read Demon Fire in mss and I can say for a fact that it is terrific! And a really great dog. Plus, I love that line about Earth being the next stop after Hell.

And, wow, I made it into the grocery store in Cobb? Okay, that's pretty dang cool. Thanks for the report.

Thank you, Elizabeth! I actually did chop wood, and shoveled the driveway so husband could get out to go to the grocery store. His back's still out which means I'm getting stuck with a lot of the man jobs! Though I find it amazing he had absolutely no trouble lifting that 36 pack of Bud into the refrigerator...

This whole new thing with mass market is just so exciting I feel like doing cartwheels...but I know better!

Thanks Jayne. You have no idea how much it means to me that you enjoyed DemonFire--you ARE, after all, THREE of my favorite authors! And yes, you were right there in the book rack in Hardesters in Cobb. It was very cool. That means you are EVERYWHERE!!!

As hard as it is for you Kate, you really need to relax as much as possible. I know that is not as easy as I'm making it sound. DemonFire will be a hit!!! As someone who has read the book due to your kindness, I've been telling people that I know that are into paranormal novels that they MUST pick this book up and read it. I will always treasure my ARC you sent me and will definitely pre-order the next book in the series when it is available. I hope your hubby's back is doing better and I hope your weather cooperates a little bit more. Try not to stress too much as I do not want to see you get sick again yourself. I know you said you had a head cold after getting rid of H1N1 so I hope it goes away fast and you feel better soon. Your so good at describing the way you are feeling it makes me think of giving birth!!! LOL It is a happy, scary, nervous feeling all rolled into one. I know you'll do well. I'll be sure to look for DemonFire and send you pics of the places I find it.

Oh GAWD! Giving birth? Sheesh...I must be complaining more than I realized because that was NOT a fun thing to experience. Thanks, Suzanne, but you're right. Writing a book and sending it out in the world IS sort of like giving birth--and then booting that baby out of the nest to fly!

I'm hoping you're right and DemonFire does well. Thank you so much. Fingers crossed!!!

Thanks, Carla, and you are so right! That's the only thing we can do. LOL...when I was chopping firewood the other day, husband, who's hurt his back (probably from chopping firewood!) kept cautioning me not to damage the typing fingers. I guess that's a sign he loves me, right?
