    FAMILY & Character Fodder

    Banner BIB bigger

    Hi everyone!
I have a special treat for you today - a guest visit from super-talented, somewhat new author, Lisa Cooke. I read Lisa's first book and was blown away. I adore historicals, and Lisa writes exactly the kind I enjoy most, meaning sexy, fun, fast-paced and with awesome heroes. I'll be first in line for her newest book, A MIDWIFE CRISIS, due out in February. (It'll probably hits shelves late January.)

Please give Lisa a gigantic "Quill" welcome!

    Thank you, Lori!
And thank you to the Quills for inviting me to guest blog today. I’m truly honored to be sharing cyberspace with such an amazing group of authors.

The topic I’d like to discuss today is: Family—can’t live with them, can’t write without them.
I have a large family. We’re talking aunts and uncles out the wazoo, and more than 20 first cousins on both sides. And I love everyone one of them…okay, some more than others, but I love them all. We’ve vacationed together, celebrated the holidays together and just plain survived together for as long as I can remember.

Now that I’ve become an author, I’ve discovered a new use for my vast and varied family--character fodder. They are now an infinite resource for the stories and characters needed to make a novel interesting. At this point, any of my family who might be reading this is probably breaking out into a cold sweat. Don’t worry, loved ones, those characters are compilations of several of my DNA cohorts, and no one will be able to recognize you specifically when the books hit the shelves.

But this does bring me to the point of this blog. Sometimes our family can be an amazing blessing, but sometimes they can make our lives miserable. That is exactly what happens to my heroine in my newest release, A MIDWIFE CRISIS. Poor Katie Napier’s family has decided she needs a husband so they find one for her. Unfortunately, they each find a different one and now Katie has three fiancés. Three! What’s a midwife to do?

Katie decides to handle the situation the best way she knows how. She gives each of her fiancés one night a week to court her, while she keeps track of their strengths and weaknesses on a list. Seems like a great plan, until she falls in love with the new doctor in town…and he’s not on the list.

I had a lot of fun writing A M IDWIFE CRISIS. I think we can all identify with meddling family members, and Katie’s zany family is about as meddlesome as they come.

    How about you?
What does your family do that makes you nuts, and how have they helped you through the years?

    Hi Lisa!
I guess my family is pretty normal (boring) because I haven't used any of their quirks in my characters yet. I do have a next door neighbor who is very similar to a character in my WIP. She's well-intentioned but a little too much like the nosey next door neighbor from the old sitcom, Bewitched.
BTW, I'm anxiously awaiting the release of Midwife Crisis. I'm sure it will entertain me as much as Texas Hold Him.
    Best,
    Janie

Oh Janie, surely there's something in your family you can exploit, er, I mean, use in your novels! I hope you enjoy A MIDWIFE CRISIS.
    Thanks for stopping in.

Welcome, Lisa. Thanks for joining us! A MIDWIFE CRISIS looks like a lot of fun. I can't say I've ever used a family member as fodder, but my brother's dog was the inspiration for a rottweiler in one of my books, who sleeps in the bathtub and plays with a bowling ball. :-)

Hi, Lisa! Your books sounds like a lot of fun! Can't wait to read it! And I warn everyone I know--family, friends, co-workers--that they are likely to be character fodder at any moment. A writing friend puts it this way: Never do anything interesting or entertaining around me, because I WILL put it in my novel! And because I write romantic suspense, it's not unusual for a friend to plead with me, "Please? Kill me off in your mext MS!"

You know what they say Lisa, truth is stranger than fiction. In most cases, readers wouldn't believe half the stuff about my family. LOL.

I can say though, that my stepfather, who was "Dad" in every way imaginable, and then some, truly influenced my writing. I write a lot of a-typical family settings with stepfathers and such. Simon Says comes right to mind, where Simon was so close to his stepfather and not really interested in meeting his "real" father.
Dad passed away on the 11th, and he left behind a lot of people who loved him dearly.

I can't really mention the other family members whose quirks and qualities are in my books, because they would be highly insulted - and rightfully so! LOL

    Hugs to all!

Thanks for the welcome, Carla! I think a dog in a book can be such a fun touch and a rottweiler in a bathtub sounds like a hoot. (Does he clean up the ring?)

How funny, Kat! My daughter-in-law gave me a t-shirt for Christmas that warns people to be good to me or they'll end up in my next novel. I love it!

Lori--I remember Simon's feelings about his father. It was very touching (your characters always are). I had heard about your father's passing and I've been hurting for you all week.

I definitely have things about my family & my inlaws that drive me crazy, but they have to put up w/ me, too. There's nothing like having family try to arrange certain things. Your new book looks really good & I hope to read it when it comes out!!

Aaww, how sweet that your hubby was brave enough to venture into the realm of romance readers and pop in here to brag on you, Lisa!

I can't wait to read MIDWIFE. What a great premise, and the title is wonderful. Makes me wish I could meet your whole gianormous family if they inspire you to write the witty, warm things you do.

I use all sorts of quirks and traits from my unsuspecting family members in my characters. (Hopefully I've mish-mashed it all so that no one person is recognizeable.) Yes, my family is a bit odd but that's all a part of who I am. In fact, I feel sorry for those poor people who have "normal" families because surely they don't have as much material to pull from.

Lisa, welcome! Like you I have a shipload of cousins and my extended family as a whole has been so supportive of my career. My almost 91 year old uncle and I call each other when roasted turkey breast is Safeway's featured item in their $5 Friday special (we're fools for turkey sandwiches and that stuff that passes for turkey in the delis just doesn't cut it). He always asks how my dirty books are going, which used to make me grind my teeth. But now I just say, "Swimmin' along."

That's true, Susan! Our families are what makes us who we are, either by embrasing what they've taught us or by running in the opposite direction as quickly as possible! LOL
Any time you want to meet the gang, you just let me know. I have enough room here for all your gang! (You can even bring your characters from MISTRESS BY MISTAKE if you want to)

Hope your new release is doing well! Thanks for dropping in

Susan--Dirty books? LOL! Don't you love it? My grandma used to read "trashy novels" as she called them, as fast as she could get them. She always had a different one stuffed in each chair in her house. I don't know how she kept track of the plots but I think she'd be tickled pink that I'm writing romance now. (I got my first ones from her ;-)

Welcome to RWQ, Lisa! A MIDWIFE CRISIS sounds absolutely delightful. I will definitely look for it. And congratulations on finding a good use for all those family members. I must admit, I, too, have taken "inspiration" from certain relatives.

Welcome Lisa, and I must say, I love the premise of your story. It sounds like a lot of fun. Since most of my characters are shapeshifters or ex-demons, I have to admit I haven't used any family members for inspiration, though I've noticed that an awful lot of my villains remind me of my ex-husband. Amazing how that works! Of course, I was always told to "write what you know!"

(Interesting word verification: lithero. Apropos, don't you think?)

Hi Lisa - I love the title/concept of your next release and look forward to reading it. I have five siblings who have multiplied the family numbers by dozens. LOL! I think writers, by nature, absorb a myriad of emotions on a regular basis, especially from the family. Mine has always been an emotional crew, so I hope that gets integrated into my work.

    Hi Lisa!
Thank for being here today! My hubby and I have 5 children, yes we are insane at times! When I married my hubby I become the member of a very large family! He is one of seven brother; all now married. When I married him my sister was already married to his older brother, talk about complicated at times. Some of the brothers divorced and remarried which lead to lots of stories and some very unique sister-in-laws! I am a novice writer but I never thought to write about then until now!!! You have given me ideas. I think my book would have to be paranormal though...LOL
