    Just one of those weeks...

This has been a really weird week. I had a book due on Monday--Wolf Tales 11--and I missed the deadline. I rarely do that because, one, deadlines are important and they're set for a reason. Production is geared to the date a book is supposed to be turned in, and unless I warn my editor way in advance, I can really mess up Kensington's schedule. Did I say this does NOT endear authors to their editors? But, an even more personal issue is that if I'm late on one book, it cuts into the time I have slotted to write the next book, so this extra two weeks I've asked for will probably come back and bite me in the butt around the end of April when StarFire, the third book in my DEMONSLAYERS series is due.

Anyway, the book's late partially because I've been doing a lot of promotional stuff for DemonFire, which is scheduled to release next Tuesday, February 23rd. I've spent so much time writing blogs and "letters to readers" for various websites that it's put me behind and I've been scrambling to finish. Of course, it helps that I finally figured out yesterday how the book should end. (That's a big part of finishing these things.) The plus side of all this is that I've been so busy working on promo and writing WT11 that I haven't had time to worry about DemonFire coming out, which is a VERY GOOD THING.

Plus, I'm going to spend all next week babysitting the grandpuppy in town while our daughter Sarah and her family are in Disneyland, so I'll be too busy consoling Gigi while her family is away to freak out about my first mass market release. Gigi is absolutely wonderful--she's a rescue dog that Sarah found after weeks and weeks of searching for just the right pet for a family with three live wires known as children. She hadn't had much luck--the dogs she saw were either too big or too small or not trustworthy around small kids. Then she found Gigi at a "pet fair." She was filthy and matted and Sarah said she took one look and fell in love. Gigi looks like she should be a big dog, but somehow she got the wrong set of legs, which means she's a big but very short dog. Now tell me, who could NOT love a girl with a face like that?

But I digress...what's made this week so strange is the way my writing has been going on the current book. Each day that I've booted up the laptop and started in on the story, I've had the day's scenes in my head from the get go. Once I've gotten each scene down, I haven't had a CLUE what was coming next. So I'd shut down for the night, and when I got up in the morning, there was the next part of the book. Not my usual process as I generally have a little bit of an idea by the time I'm down to the last three or so chapters, how the book is going to end. Not this time--I didn't know for sure until yesterday, and I'm still not positive how I'm going to get there. It's not that the process has failed me, but it's sure taken a jog. It's left me a bit off balance, but also really excited to see what's going to happen next. I should be done by this weekend and be ready to turn it over to my beta readers. That's when I find out if this new writing method will have paid off or not! (My beta readers are not at all shy about telling me when I've totally mucked up a story. I "think" this is a good thing!)

My publisher has put up a wonderful webpage for me with the first chapters of DemonFire and HellFire, the second book in the series. I hope you'll take a look, and if you're out and about with a camera in your hand and see any displays of DemonFire (it's supposed to make it to grocery stores and Walmarts and Target stores along with bookstores around the country) take a picture and send it to me at kate@katedouglas.com. I'm so excited about having a book out with this type of distribution, I'll be running a contest on my Facebook page and posting some of the photos I get of places where readers have seen it. The winner will get an ARC of HellFire, the second book in the series.

Now I need to get back to work on Wolf Tales 11 and make sure the ending I think it's going to have is the one it's actually going to get. And then I need to think about StarFire and what's going to happen in that one.

And totally off subject, but have I mentioned lately how much I absolutely love my job? I'm sitting here writing this blog with a stupid grin on my face, thinking about what I've got on my schedule that's making me nuts and at the same time how much fun I'm having. I hope the day never comes where I feel jaded by the wonderful opportunity I've been given, to write the stories that pop into my head, and actually have people read them. It's an absolute rush, and I'm thankful every day for such a cool opportunity. It's got to be the greatest career in the world.

So how has your week been? Were you stuck in snow on the east coast, glued to TV and the Olympics, or are you taking your free time (we all have LOTS of that, right?) to read some good books. And if so, what are you reading? I'm waiting for my copy of Stella's OUT OF BODY to arrive. With any luck, it's going to show up AFTER I finish Wolf Tales 11! Wish me luck!

    Aloha Kate!

So you know I have not been stuck in the white stuff. Sorry to all of you who have been.

I'm anxiously awaiting Demonfire and you are right, awesome new website for this series. It's a great book and I'll pimp the heck out of it. =)

Thanks for sharing that cute picture of Gigi. My baby too is a rescue puppy and even as I watched Westminster just the other day, I really hope that more people go out and adopt from their local animal shelter.

As for what have I been doing? I'm an Olympics junkie as much as I am a Wolf Tale junkie/pimpette. Lol! I can't even seem to turn away from that rather odd looking game, curling.

Okay, it's back to watching Evan Lysacek win his gold. =) Good luck with finishing up WT11. Remember...lots of Chanku Sexy Scenes please!

Well this week has been full of you guessed it more snow. I think it will be June before my yard is unburied.

As for books I'm reading. I have gone completely out of the norm and I'm reading the new book by Ozzy Osbourne. The man should be dead. Oh my the things he has done. Then I'm off toe read some very sexy books by Lauren Dane.

I have my camera ready and it's in my purse at all times so I will be able to catch the pictures for you and a chance to win an ARC copy of HellFire to go along with my ARC copy of Demonfire. LOL!!!

Hope you will get a chance to relax a few days next week after you finish my book of Wolf Tales 11. I have been pimping away for all your books and I know the girls are ready.

    hugs,
    Tracey

Ah, Kate. The one thing you can be guaranteed in writing is that every time you think you have your process nailed, it takes a left turn. *g*

What a cutie pie Gigi is. I got a dog from the pound for my 16th birthday who was like her--big head, sturdy body, with about 3 inch legs. He looked like he'd been chopped off at the knees. :) His name was Tiger and he was such a character, lots and lots of personality.

PS I apologize for my announcement ending up atop your post. I should have checked to see where it was in the lineup. Sheesh

Kate - I won't repeat my story about getting hit w/ stomach flu & getting stuck in the snowy ditch 3 days ago. It's on Susan's blog comments & facebook. The important thing is I had help almost right away & one of them a family member to get me out!!
On a brighter note, Gigi is adorable. I just had to give my cat a bath yest. after she came in looking covered in slush & mud. She is such good company when she is in a good mood. I have been reading the third book in Lori's fighter series & it is a definite day brightener. I also stick my nose in other books & my TBR pile is growing!! I hope you have a great week dogitting & waiting for your official book release.

I'm reading "No Matter Why" by Joanna Aislinn. It's a sweet romance and drink it in with a cup of the Butter Rum flavored coffee I got for Christmas. Hmmmmm to both.

G'morning, Jay! I haven't watched hardly any Olympics at all with the deadline hanging over my head. Plus, they're on SO LATE at night! It's frustrating--they're happening in my time zone and delayed three hours for TV. Grumble...thanks for pimping my books. I'm hoping to get Tracey's add up in my newsletter today--for those interested, Tracey's put together "Wolf Tales Pimpette" t-shirts! They're wonderful! (I think Jay's the one who coined the phrase...can't really recall)

Hey, Tracey! (Talking about you, m'dear!)Tell the girls I'm looking forward to chatting with them again. Trying to get the t-shirt site up today.

Susan, don't worry about the announcement. Not a problem. And, you are so right about the process changing when you actually get cocky and think you know what you're doing. Why IS that? :-)

Hi Rebecca--I saw that. NOT where you want the car to go, but when they start sliding, there's no stopping them! Glad you're okay, but sorry about the bug, too. You need a redo button on the week!

Oooh...Linda! Butter Rum flavored coffe...now that sounds wonderful!

I'm at the research/plotting/pacing the ceiling point in my next book. Weather? Haven't noticed.

    That is one sweet-looking grandpuppy!

Cute pup! I love your enthusiasm for your work -- I love to write as much now as I did as a kid when I'd climb a tree with pad and pen.

We're on our way to Florida for a week. I'll be reading Out of Body by the pool!

Oh Kate, I know all about promo getting in the way of writing. It used to be so much easier when all we did was write, huh?
I'm sure you'll get to it in time, and I'm sure it'll be well worth the wait!
BEAUTIFUL doggie! Oh, I love him. I wanna give him a big hug.
As to my week - my son is home from South Korea. I hadn't seen him in 14 months (except on Ichat) and I missed him horribly. For that reason alone, it's been a stellar week!

    Hugs,

    Lori

    Kate,
That is the most adorable dog, ever! You lucky thing, getting to sit with her.

    Stay warm and cozy,

Thanks, Elizabeth. Isn't she a sweetheart? She's the most loving dog I ever so--not a mean bone in her body, and only about eighteen months old when Sarah got her. She's in doggy heaven with three little kids who love her to pieces. And just a warning--be careful with that ceiling pacing. It can be really rough on the back when you land!

Lori, how exciting to get your boy back! LOL...they're always our babies, aren't they? Is he here permanently, or is this just a visit? Have a wonderful time!!!

Thanks, Lynne. She is a sweetheart, and her coat feels like silk. Sarah thinks she's a corgi/Australian shepherd cross, but with a wonderful plume of a tail.

Awww, cute puppy! We're looking to add a dog to our family, but it will have to be one our cats can't intimidate. *G*

    Have a great weekend!

That was the really cool thing about Gigi--she and Marco the cat get along really great, and Marco can be an absolute pain in the butt.

Kate, this week has been like the "twilight zone" and I think that Rod Sterling is stalking me. ;>D I am currently reading three books at one time: Zoe's Gift by Jory Strong, The Broken H by J.L. Langely, and Luke and Jezebel by Ravyn Wilde. I'm caring for three grandchildren and looking at the Olympics, Ghost Hunters, and Shear Genius while checking my mail on the internet and talking to my friends there. I'm tired just writing down what I've been doing. But since I'm tired most of the time, it's normal. lol.

I'm looking forward to DemonFire and the rest of the DemonSlayer series whenever you've finished with the rest of the books. I'm also looking forward to all the other books you may have written after Wolf Tales 9 cause I couldn't put that one down. ;>D I wish you luck and good writing and if you get tired, I'll send you some Geritol to put some pep in your fingers and mind. ha ha. Take Care. Mo

Mo, m'dear...if Rod Serling is stalking you, you ARE in the Twilight Zone because he's been dead for a LOOOOONG time! (I used to LOVE that show!) And I have to say, as hectic as my week has been, yours would have me begging for mercy. (Mo didn't mention that two of those grandkids are twins...I keep thinking of that double trouble thing!) Thanks for stopping by. Now shut that computer down and go take a break!

Hi, Kate: Gosh, do I know the feeling of trying to close a book with a lot of other stuff going on. But take it from me, DemonFire is fabulous. You're gonna go flying with this one, trust me. Yep, I'll watch for first sighting here in Seattle.

Jayne, THANK YOU! I owe you big time, m'dear! It's been so hard to concentrate, but I'm down to the last two chapters and it's starting to all come together, and believe me, that feels SO GOOD! AND, I got my first pictures today from a reader in Burlington, MA, of DemonFire on the shelf in a Barnes and Noble. It's OUT THERE! (Okay, yes, I am a nerd...but I still think I'm going to go yark)

I am so glad to hear you are continuing with the Wolf Tales series, but how do you manage with all the different, series of books? Wolf tales, Sexy beast Demon Fire and keeping 'em all seperate? I love all your books and can't wait for WT11 to come out and looking forward to Demonfire! When will you continue the Sexy Beast series?

    4:05 PM
    Blogger Kate Douglas said...

Thanks, Tracie--the Sexy Beast novellas are part of Wolf Tales, so they're not difficult at all...that entire series is like a soap opera in that the stories are tightly connected and go from novel to novella to novel. You can find the reading order on the front page of my website at www.katedouglas.com.

DemonFire is part of a new series, The DemonSlayers, and I'll admit it's tough--especially since I've got Anton Cheval in Wolf Tales and Alton the Lemurian in DemonFire. Not quite sure HOW that happened!

I won't be doing any more of the Sexy Beast anthologies, at least for now. I'll do two Wolf Tales novels a year and two Demonslayers, at least through 2011. That's how far out I'm currently contracted. Thanks for asking!
