    On vacation with books

Happy almost-to-the-end-of-February, everyone! I'm in south Florida with my husband, son, mother and sister, enjoying a break from winter. We're getting a foot of snow at home today. Nice for cross-country skiing when we get back but right now...I'm at the pool enjoying the Florida warmth and sunshine.

Whenever I'm on the road, I love to stop into bookstores. Yesterday I wandered into a nearby Barnes & Noble and snapped up my copy of Stella's OUT OF BODY. That cover just "pops." It was hard to resist so many of the other books with it, but I brought several with me and try to buy only one at a time when I'm on the road. Otherwise I end up with an even heavier suitcase!

I dove right in. OUT OF BODY is a great read. I'm having a blast. Reading on vacation's always fun, but reading a book by a friend makes it even more special. I'll finish it today and wander back to the bookstore and
see what else I find. My sister's reading Sue Grafton's U IS FOR UNDERTOW right now, and my mother's reading a Patrick Taylor book. Zack's reading I, SNIPER by Stephen Hunter, and Joe's reading Robert Crais's new Joe Pike book -- I read it on the flight down here and it's so good.

We walk and read a lot on vacation, but we'll hit Los Olas and maybe the casino, and we're trying new restaurants as well as old favorites...I had fried plantains yesterday. We don't exactly get those in my corner of Vermont. ;-)

Congratulations, Stella, on a wonderful start to a terrific new series. I can't wait for the second book, even if I'm reading it by the woodstove home in Vermont!

Do you like to read on vacation? Obviously Stella's book didn't hang out in my "TBR" pile for long, but what's in your "TBR" pile -- whether you're reading at home, in a hammock on the beach, or on break at work?

Take care, and have a great day!
    Carla
P.S. Just back with Kate Douglas's DEMON FIRE!

Hi Carla - I will see if I have time to answer this real quick. My dtr & two friends missed the bus, which means I get to do the honors. I love your picture of your books by the pool. My TBR pile is growing almost daily. I remember you said you like yours to be tipping over. You will laugh. I told Becke Davis/Martin you like yours tipping over & she says she has bookshelves & a bin for her TBR pile (something like that!!). Mine would be too if I was constantly meeting all these authors. I am going to read L.L. Foster's Servant: The Awakening one of these days soon, I have a Lucy Monroe Book, a Kay Stockham book & I have been checking for Kate Douglas's DemonFire, but it's not on the shelf yet at my local Walmart. If it's not there today if I check, then I will book at B&N when I am over that way tomorrow AM. Your vacation sounds great!!

I love reading on vacation and I need one right now so that I can tackle my TBR pile!

My TBR pile is obscene right now! Just a few of the books in my TBR pile are Back in Black by Lori, Original Sin by Allison Brennan, No Chance by Christy Reece, Pleasure of a Dark Prince by Kresley Cole, Lead Me On by Victoria Dahl, Knock Me For A Loop by Heidi Betts and Here Comes Trouble by Donna Kauffman!

One would think that being unemployed provides me countless free hours to read but I find myself more busy now than I ever was when I was employed!

Rebecca and Aly, I have many of those same books on my TBR pile at home. I couldn't take them all with me. I'll hit Borders today -- it's one of my favorites, right on the waterway -- and see what other March books I can find. I'll let you know. I don't have Demon Fire yet, either, but hope to by the end of the day. :-)

Oh, Carla! You break my heart.

First, you live around the corner from my hometown that I haven't been able to visit in 3 years.

Then...THEN you are in south Florida and at a Borders on the waterway! And that makes me think of the Borders in Ft. Lauderdale that I go to when we visit my mom.

:Sniffing: I am thinking I can't like you anymore! LOL!! :)

Enjoy the rest of your vacation and your books!

On my vacation last summer I had 15 books with me--when I'm not working, I'm reading--and that stack included 10 of Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake series, one by Stephanie Laurens, and four by Marjorie M Liu...

Yesterday I picked up Out of Body and I'll be reading it today. There are several others on my TBR pile, but that one's on the top, along with Demon Fire. :)

If you guys keep writing, I'll keep reading. Thanks for the hours of relaxing and enjoying you provide me.

Thanks, Aly and Cindy! I'm back from my trip to Borders with Demon Fire in hand. It was tough to resist buying a dozen books, but I'm only here a week. :-)

J.Leigh, I feel that way about the writers I enjoy -- if they keep writing, I'll keep reading! I also love to discover new authors...which I often do on vacation.

Ya know...that's just not right. With all those pictures you posted I'm now going through Bookstore Withdrawals! lol

I don't go on vacation very often but the last time I went to New York to visit the in laws I did stop into a little bookstore just to see what books they had that might differe from what was around my neighborhood and I was happily pleased that most bookstores have the same selection in them, so I didn't feel like I was missing anything. I did buy one book that I hadn't know was out at the time but withe verything we had going on I wasn't able to read it until i got home anyway.

There is nothing I love more than reading on vacation! Enjoy Florida, Carla. Sounds like a good place to be right now. Heard there are more storms moving into the Northeast.

And I loved Stella's OUT OF BODY. You're right, that cover really does pop.

Reading by a pool--now that sounds like heaven. I love to read on vacation. I've been heavily into urban fantasy books recently, so on my mini vaca/ski trip, I read I-can't-remember-which-book of Ilona Andrews and started The Art of Drivng in the Rain, the latter of which isn't UF but which i soooo enjoyed. I've recently whittled down my TBR pile. It's now only about a dozen deep.

    Makin' progress here. *g*

I always, always take a couple of bags of books on vacation with me. I end up leaving them in the common room at the condo for others. Somehow I also end up swapping books that I brought for ones that I see and my brain says; "Oh!! I haven't read this one!!" LOL

And my TBR pile? Well lets just say that it is a constantly growing entity. I read a few from that pile; then I end up adding 10 or so more titles to it. Needless to say; it never grows any smaller. I know its a problem.......but what a wonderful problem to have! :D

Carla; I hope to be at the beach in June, so tell the ocean that I'll be seeing it in a few months. And I hope you have a great vacation!

Carla, how cool is that! Thanks for getting DemonFire--I do hope you enjoy it. I'm sorry to be such a slug about checking in--I had a car accident yesterday! Driving over Mt. St. Helena in the rain and I spun out. Had a choice of over the fifty foot drop or into the hill, and luckily I hit the mountain--hard. The truck is trashed but other than some bruises and pulled muscles, I'm going to live, but the point of all this is that if Rebecca hadn't told me you'd mentioned my book, I wouldn't have gotten here for a couple more days, so thank you Rebecca and thank you Carla!

My TBR pile currently has OUT OF BODY, Angela Knights MASTER OF FIRE, Allison Brennon's ORIGINAL SIN, and Alyss Day's ATLANTIS REDEEMED, and I'm currently reading Elizabeth Lowell's JADE ISLAND, which is SO good!

Have a wonderful vacation. I'm at our daughter's in Healdsburg, dog sitting Gigi, and planning to use their hot tub tonight on my battered bod.

Oh my gosh, Kate. I'm so glad you are alright. Feel better soon and be careful out there.

Kate! I'm glad you're all right but how scary!!! Puts everything in perspective. Be well. I hope the hot tub helped, and I hope having good books to read help, too.

I have a friend who's never without a book in her hand bag. I need a bigger handbag!

Today's cool and windy in Florida but the storms are pretty bad at home -- so no complaints. We're passing books among us and off to Los Olas for key lime pie.

Carla, I've been buying your back list since I've discovered you here (love your books, BTW!).

You might be interested to know that Stonebrook Cottage is the most difficult one to come by (used is a little easier). On Amazon, there are two new paperback books being offered by two different private sellers. Each one is advertised at $600.00!

Thought you might like to know how popular your books are... take care!! Oh, and I'm waiting for Cold Dawn, tapping my foot impatiently!

Hi Carla: I just love to read on vacation. It's such a treat to feel free of guilt while loafing around with book in hand.

You are so kind to have taken pictures showing Kate's Demon Fire and my Out of Body. And I'm absolutely "chuffed" you enjoyed the story. That's one of my brit sayings and I think it comes from the way steam engines puffed up to speed and made that chuffa-chuffa sound.

Enjoy every moment of your vacation!

    Cheers, Stella

Kate! Just read your note. What a horrid experience. I'm so glad you're essentially okay although you must be so shaken up and I bet you're battered. Please take great care of yourself and take time to heal.

    Fondly, Stella

Ms Douglas, I hope you recover well and swiftly, and VERY STRONGLY recommend seeing a chiropractor. It is amazing how much a visit to one will help you bounce back, and prevent complications.
Carla, of course reading on vacation is a must! What good is a vacation, if you can't read on it? Personally, vacations to an inhabited area instead of a camping trip I usually visit the local library rather than the bookstore, but then my family has speed reading in our genes; my sister-in-law tells me that most people don't read a series in a sitting. Camping trips are much harder; when you can easily go through three books on a full work day, four if there aren't many chores or last-minute business, bringing along enough books for an entire vacation is awfully hard when you have to be able to portage it all yourself!
Canoe trips are wonderful, really they are, but anything over a week and I'm very very glad to get back home to my personal 'library'!
My 'TBR' pile is a couple of grocery bags of paperbacks that were picked up for 5$ each at a garage sale, and they're very potlatch so far; I never know what I'll pull out next.

I have a book or two in my bag everywhere I go. I feel more lost without reading material when I'm out than without, let's say, my mobile phone.
Books on a vacation? Would never dream of doing without! That would totally send me into panic mode!
"TBR pile"? That has already evolved into a "TBR cabinet" and is still grouwing....

Just got back from a short (for us) trip, so I'm checking in late. I like to read any time I can! Vacation is a bonus. In fact, reading is a mini-vacation for me.
